38,000 blood donations needed ever day in Pakistan: Medical experts

PESHAWAR, Oct 21 (APP): One out of ten patients admitted in hospital across Pakistan needs blood and per day the need of blood donation is 38,000 bags to meet the demand, said medical experts during blood donation camp organized here at Khyber Medical University. Talking to the donors Prof. Dr. Shah Taj Masood manager regional blood Centre Peshawar, said at one time an adult can donate up to 13 per cent of his total body blood, and an adult male can donate after every three months 4 times in a year while adult and healthy females can donate three times blood after every four months interval. She said, an individual male or female who is between 18-60 age and disease free physically and mentally healthy, never had hepatitis weight 50kg or more can donate blood without any fear. The Khyber Medical University (KMU)-Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IPM&R) in collaboration with Regional Blood Centre Peshawar organized the blood donation camp. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah VC KMU, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saleem Registrar, Prof. Dr. Jawad Ahmad Director IBMS, Dr. Zia ul Haq Director ORIC, Dr. Haidar Darain Director IPMR, faculty and students were present at the occasion. Talking to the donors Prof. Dr. Shah Taj Masood manager regional blood Centre Peshawar, said, adult male has 70ml/kg where as a normal female has 67 ml/kg blood. Blood contains 45% cellular elements and fluid parts plasma as insisted of 55% which is made up of 90% water and 10% solids. At one time an adult can donate up to 13% of his total body blood. Meanwhile talking to the ceremony VC KMU Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah said forming of a blood donor society by the management, faculty and students is another feather in the cap of IPMR. He said through blood donation survival of human lives is the real service to humanity and hope fully such like positive and co-curricular activities will not only polish the overall personality of the organizers and donors but it will definitely have a way towards a balance and welfare society. He announced that the activities of blood donor society of IPMR would be fully supported and backed by the university management and these activities would be extended to all constituent institutes of KMU. He appreciated the role and moral of the blood donor society and donors and hoped that the example of service to humanity set by the young energetic students of IPMR will also be followed by other students of various constituent institutes with true spirit.
