Kaira rules out delay in general elections

ISLAMABAD, Oct 2 (APP): Minister for Information and
Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Tuesday that general
elections will be held on time as the government has no intention of
delaying them.
Speaking in a morning show of a private television channel, the
minister said that political parties, media, Election Commission and
the courts will never tolerate any delay in the elections. He also
ruled out chance of any prolonged tenure for caretaker setup as the
political forces in the country will not allow this.
Kaira said that in the past, the federal governments tried to
keep powers with themselves but the present PPP government under the
leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari has devolved the powers to
the provinces. Under the National Finance Award over 70 per cent of
national resources have been transferred to the provinces,he added.
"Despite the fact that the PPP did not have a simple majority
in the National Assembly, but with the cooperation of the coalition
partners,it has amended the Constitution, has done record legislation
and introduced and implemented Aghaz-e-Haqooq-e-Balochistan
package ",said the minister.
To a question he said that Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was
dynamic leader and even today people are ready to die for him.
About Shaheed Benazir Bhutto,he said that she faced the
ordeals during the dictatorial rule and led the party very bravely
and twice won the elections.
To another question,he said that when President Asif Ali
Zardari took over the party the country was facing anarchy and the
party was facing a great vacuum after martyrdom of charismatic
leader Benazir Bhutto, but he faced all the challenges very bravely.
Kaira said that when the PPP came to power in 2008,the country
had to import wheat, sugar and pulses and the economy was in a
shambles.
"In such a chaotic situation,President Asif Ali Zardari by
following the policy of national reconciliation introduced by
Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and formed a coalition government which has
successfully run the affairs of the state for past four and a half
years",he said.
Replying to a question about the Benazir Bhutto assassination
case,he said that the family members especially the children of the
martyred leader were satisfied with the proceedings of the case.He
said that the PPP government can never neglect the case of Shaheed
Benazir Bhutto as she was very dear to every PPP worker.
To a question about, power shortage in the country,Kaira said
that during the tenures of Mian Nawaz Sharif and Pervez Musharraf
not a single mega watt electricity was produced which resulted in
the shortfall. After coming to power the PPP government started work
on several power generation projects including Bhasha dam,Kohala
Dam,Neelam Jhelum,and Thar coal project.
Dispelling the impression about closure of industrial units in
the country, the minister said that during past two years exports have
registered a record growth.
The minister said that the present people's government has
regularized tens of thousands of contract and daily-wage public
sector employees appointed during previous regimes. Moreover it
reinstated thousands of employees sacked during 1996-97.
He said it was unfortunate that some politicians were trying
to give provincial colour to the issue of loadshedding and gas
shortage."The entire country was facing power and gas shortage and
it was a national issue and nobody can get political milage from
this", he added.
