NADRA issues 92 million CNICs; plan to register rest before next elction
ISLAMABAD, Oct 16 (APP): Chairman National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) on Tuesday said that NADRA has issued 92 million CNICs which constitutes 96 percent of adult population and has an aggressive plan to register the rest of folks before next elections. Chairman NADRA, Tariq Malik stated this while felicitating the authorities of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on the eve of the National Voters' Day terming it a great national cause that will determined the promising future of the country because only vote make the country thrive and prosper by leaps and bounds. He said that Pakistan needs to be saved by vote and the future of Pakistan depends on the eligible voters by checking, verifying and rectifying their voters' location. Tariq Malik said that if the people want positive changes in society, they have to come out and get themselves registered on electoral list, he added. He said the ECP's decision of announcing the same reconciling electoral rolls used in 2008 general elections with NADRA Citizen Database and verifying voters' identify was a major step towards preparation of transparent electoral rolls. Tariq Malik said that the project resulted in removing inaccuracies, duplication and unverified voters, which undoubtedly helped restore public confidence. "It is first time in the 65-year history the country that nobody is registered at more than one place, which has not yet been achieved in voters list of USA, UK, France and India,"he said. However, women registration has seen a significant spike of 84 percent recently and everyday about 15000 people are getting their CNICs, mostly young adults turning 17 to 18, Tariq added. Subsequently all new ID card holders will be registered as new voters before general elections", he added. Malik said NADRA is catalyst in liberating voters lists in a way that each voter is empowered now to check his/her vote by sending 13 digit CNIC number (without spaces or dash) to 8300 and verify theirs vote identity over mobile phones. NADRA also sought help leaders of all political parties requesting their assistance in mobilizing Pakistani citizens to obtain their CNICs, which is mandatory for registration as voters. He urged on the political parties to extend their outreach and presence across the country by providing an opportunity to NADRA to access pockets of population that remain unregistered.
